Poland's flagship airline PLL LOT will likely secure an approval of the European Commission for the state aid granted to the firm, EU Competitiveness Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said during a conference on Wednesday.

"LOT will receive a positive decision" on state aid, Almunia said. "I cannot get ahead of events, but the works progress in the direction of a positive decision. . . Let us wait several weeks."

The European Commission is inquiring into whether the ca. EUR 200 million of restructuring aid is in line with EU state aid rules. Should it be deemed unlawful, LOT would be obligated to return it.

LOT received the first tranche of state aid of some EUR 100 million in December 2012 and is still to receive another PLN 381 million in restructuring aid.
