Deer talking in human voices

If you stroll by Warsaw’s Defilad Square in front of the Palace of Culture and Science, you may come across the unlikely sight of golden deer speaking in human voices.

Commissioned by the Dramatyczny Theater as part of a project called Defilad Square, this unusual sound-and-vision installation has been created by young, Warsaw-based visual artist Eliza Proszczuk. The deer in her work are props from old set designs provided by the Dramatyczny Theater. Proszczuk has painted them gold and given them the voices of Warsaw residents who were interviewed in a street survey, talking about what theater means to them. The recordings are played back when movement is detected around the deer.

The Defilad Square project aims to turn the area around the Palace of Culture into a vibrant public square that draws both tourists and locals.
