Ruling PO bets on non-partisan mayors in local elections
August 18, 2014
Poland's governing party Civic Platform (PO) struck agreements with non-partisan mayors of select Polish cities (Wroclaw, Bialystok, Katowice, Sopot) and will support those candidates in upcoming local elections in exchange for positions of deputy mayors and other important municipal posts, the daily Gazeta Wyborcza reported wrote citing anonymous PO politicians.
PO views the agreement as a tool for preventing losing power in cities associated with the party, a remedy for PO's dry spell in opinion polls, the daily wrote.
At the same time, some mayors (Poznan's Ryszard Grobelny is the most prominent example) refused to enter into an agreement with PO viewing its support rather as a liability than an asset, the daily wrote.
