During his one-day visit to Lviv Oct. 4, Prime Minister Leszek Miller announced an initiative to organize a Ukrainian round table" in Warsaw-a meeting between representatives of the government in Kiev with those in opposition to the presidency of Leonid Kuchma.

The political debate is formally dedicated to the issue of Ukraine's future relations with NATO and the European Union following the approaching expansion of these organizations into Central Europe. However, this is also an opportunity, if the Kiev government takes advantage of Miller's proposal, to create the first attempt at dialogue between the parties of Ukraine's internal conflict in many months. President Kuchma initially sharply criticized Miller's proposal but after speaking with President Kwa¶niewski Oct. 8, he agreed to send the head of the presidential office Viktor Medvedchuk and Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh. Kuchma claimed he could not be present at the conference because of an upcoming visit by the president of Iran to Kiev.
