Pornography Anyone?
September 4, 2003
Pornography, the latest film by Jan Jakub Kolski, was well received by audiences at the Venice Film Festival. Favorable reviews have appeared in the media and Krzysztof Majchrzak, who plays the lead, is being mentioned as likely winner of the award for best actor.
The gala showing of Pornography Aug. 30 ended with a lengthy ovation. Interest in Pornography has been great in Venice since the very beginning. Some were attracted by the title, others by the name of Witold Gombrowicz, one of the most outstanding writers and playwrights of the 20th century, on whose novel Kolski based his film.
The buzz surrounding Pornography started to build many weeks ago when Director of the Venice Festival Moritz de Hadeln said, "those who expect to see explicit erotic scenes in Kolski's film will be disappointed. But I believe that it will be one of the front-runners in this year's competition."
Kolski, 47, is a graduate of the prestigious Łódź Film School. Most of his films, regarded as examples of magic realism, are set in the countryside. The most famous titles are Pogrzeb kartofla (Burial of a Potato) Jańcio Wodnik (Johnnie the Aquarius) and Historia kina w Popielawach (History of Cinema in Popielawy).
