The Servant of Two Masters at Dramatyczny Theater
February 24, 2017
A fresh take on the classic comedy of errors, The Servant of Two Masters kicked off the new season at Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater.
Originally written by 18th-century Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, The Servant of Two Masters centers around Harlequin, a servant working for two employers at the same time. Struggling to do both his jobs well, he fails miserably as he mixes up orders, inadvertently gives away secrets and makes things more complicated than they are.
Directed by Tadeusz Bradecki, the new staging of the familiar commedia dell’arte offers a rollercoaster-paced show with a lot of dancing and singing, in addition to compelling characters such as the stingy Pantalone, the opinionated Dottore and two romantic lovers.
This winter, a visit to the Dramatyczny Theater is a promise of a fun night out.
The program for the play highlights Goldoni’s cultural background of Venice where carefree amusement was the order of the day. It also describes The Servant of Two Masters as “a harmless nothing-is-what-it-seems comedy.”
