Poland could build its first nuclear power block by 2030 it improve its electricity mix, as it sees its cost as slightly lower than that for off-shore wind farms, Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchorzewski told wnp.pl industrial news website.
"I'm in favor of starting construction of a single nuclear block for the time being," Tchorzewski said. "If we make now a decision on building a power block, then it would be operational by some 2030," the minister said.
The cost at PLN 24 billion for a single 1,200 MW block is more than double of the cost of similar capacity coal block, but still cheaper than an off-shore wind farm, the minister said.
The nuclear plant could improve Poland's power mix, allowing Poland to meet EU requirements concerning average emissions, the minister added.
