Tensions between President and Minister of Defence
April 21, 2017
Minister of Defense Antoni Macierewicz is a benefit to governing party Law and Justice (PiS) and the appearance of conflict with President Andrzej Duda is only proof of the vagueness of the Polish Constitution, governing party MP Jacek Sasin said in an interview. A scandal surrounding the various employments of Macierewicz's protege Bartlomiej Misiewicz is mostly just wind from the opposition, blown way out of proportion, he said.
Tensions between Duda and Macierewicz have been increased by a series of incidents in which Macierewicz has apparently refused to respond to a string of correspondence from the President, correspondence which has since been leaked to the media.
Polish protocol requires official responses to such inquiries, but Macierewicz is apparently flaunting his political untouchability, the daily Rzeczpospolita suggests in an analysis.
