Polish Armed Forces Day, a public holiday celebrated on August 15, was marked this year by the ongoing conflict between the president Andrzej Duda and defense minister Antoni Macierewicz, major Polish dailies report.
The president's words on the "common welfare" and him highlighting the fact he is the commander-in-chief could signal that Andrzej Duda will aim to have a genuine impact on military issues, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reports.
The president will defend his constitutional authority on military matters, insiders told the daily Rzeczpospolita. His words herald his active participation in the planned army reform, the daily adds.
As part of the conflict, the president refrained from announcing general promotions this year, which is traditionally a part of the official ceremony, only a US and NATO general was awarded by Andrzej Duda during the Tuesday celebrations, the dailies point out.
