New law on gas imports pushes prices up

The Polish government has pushed the prices of natural gas 10% above those in Germany with its new law on gas imports, the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reports citing experts.
As of August, natural gas importers are obliged to maintain inventories or subcontract the service to Gas Storage Poland, a unit of listed natgas group PGNiG, the daily reminds.
Some companies which decided to abandon or reduce imports have had to buy the commodity at the energy exchange TGE in order to deliver supplies to their clients.
July turnover in natural gas on the TGE more than tripled in annual terms to 15.1 TWh. Natural gas consumers are trying to protect themselves against price increases. In its June contract with PGNiG, chemicals group Azoty secured indexation to German prices.
