The European Commission issued the so-called "reasoned opinion" on the Polish law on the functioning of common courts, all major dailies report. The EC challenges the Justice Minister's right to prolong tenures of judges who reached the retirement age, as well as the ministerial prerogative to appoint and call off court presidents at will.
The Commission also sees different retirement thresholds for male and female judges as discriminatory. Poland has been given a month to introduce measures that would answer European Commission's doubts as to the legality of the reform, otherwise it faces a hearing at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
