The Polish banking market might see the Italian financial giant UniCredit enter its banking stage again as the group is reportedly in talks with the German government over a potential merger with Commerzbank, the daily Parkiet writes, citing Bloomberg's findings.
Commerzbank holds 69% of shares in mBank, the fifth biggest bank on the Polish market.
However, the merger is unlikely to be executed in the near future as both UniCredit and Commerzbank are in the midst of restructuring, experts points out.
It is also not excluded that the French bank BNP Paribas, the majority shareholder in Poland's sixth largest bank BGZ BNP Paribas, will venture to join forces with Commerzbank, sources close to the matter say.
