Cable TV operator UPC Polska may be unable to complete its merger with peer Multimedia Polska due to reservations of anti-trust watchdog UOKiK and telecom regulator UKE, newspapers Rzeczpospolita and Parkiet write of unofficial information.
UKE would be willing to okay the transaction if UPC allowed competitors to use its network and Multimedia froze its retail prices, but UOKiK is reportedly reluctant to make use of UKE's advice.
Telecom operators like Play would benefit from a failed merger as they could then become a subject of interest for UPC owner Liberty Global, according to brokerage DM BZ WBK analyst Pawel Puchalski, while Multimedia owners, the cable TV sector and telecom Netia would suffer, according to Parkiet.
