Another failure of the opposition

Poland's main opposition parties Civic Platform (PO) and Nowoczesna came under a wave of criticism from women's rights organizations and liberal media for their failure to take a decisive stance on the civic draft bill liberalizing the abortion law, dubbed "Save the Women," with 39 MPs of PO and Nowoczesna abstaining or absenting themselves from the voting in Sejm and selected MPs voting in favor of tightening the abortion regulations.
The attitude of liberal MPs claiming to be women rights defenders, especially from the Nowoczesna's ranks, is totally incomprehensible, a left-wing activist and feminist Barbara Nowacka comments for the daily Gazeta Wyborcza.
PO and Nowoczesna might face a serious crisis and unity breach as three conservative PO MPs who voted against sending the bill to works in committees were almost immediately expelled from the party and some prominent Nowoczesna MPs suspended their membership in the caucus in reaction to their colleagues' conservative tactics, the daily Rzeczpospolita observes.
At the same time, the counter-project tightening the abortion law and backed by Poland's clergy passed the voting - a fact resented by the ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) as it would much rather delay taking a stand on the sensitive issue, a source within PiS tells Gazeta Wyborcza.
