Wroclaw ZOO with newborn tapir
February 19, 2018
Article's tools:

On January 31th at the Wroclaw ZOO, a representative of endangered species was born - the South American tapir. This is very important because it is an umbrella species that determines the functioning of the entire ecosystem. Unfortunately, the population of these animals is decreasing at a drastic pace.
The little female is called Sara. Right after birth, her weight was at 6 kg and she was 45 cm long. Her fur is brown with white, masking stripes characteristic for all tapirs. Her mother Sonia is 23 years old and her father Tapinos - 22.
Tapirs lead a solitary life, but those from the Wroclaw ZOO have created a family and they take care of the youngest member together. Sarah, like every toddler, focuses on eating and sleeping. When a stranger appears, Sonia covers her daughter with her own body.
South American tapirs are one of four species of tapirs, living in vast areas of South America, from Venezuela through Brazil to Argentina. They lead the night life. They are herbivorous and feed on coastal plants and wild rice. When searching for food, they often break through dense jungle, which is why they have hard skin. They are shy, so they behave cautiously. They make up for sight deficiency with sense of smell. Although they are the largest mammals of South America, they have natural enemies - puma and jaguar, as well as caimans and anacondas.
Sara tapir will stay in Wroc³aw ZOO for two years. After that she will be transported to a different zoo. Until then she is going to stay in elephant’s yard where everyone can visit her.
