Manatees are one of the rarest, endangered animals whose preservation is assured by zoological gardens. They can only be found in 19 gardens in the world, of which 10 are in Europe. The birth of each calf is a big event, because it is another small step to ensure the survival of this species.
For the birth of a small manatee the Wroclaw ZOO keepers have been preparing from November, when Ling was found to be pregnant. The preparations consisted of consultations with other gardens regarding the rearing of calves of this species, building a special playpen and bringing in special milk, in case the female does not feed the youngsters.
Toddler came to the world March 3. The staff were exceptionally happy about the little girl, because there is far less females in European population than there is males. The female was about 115 cm long with 20 kg body weight. This is the first manatee born in Wroclaw, so the keepers named her LAVIA, which comes from the word Wratislavia.
It is also worth noting that the European population (including Wroclaw’s individuals) is going to join the natural population near Guadeloupe in the future. For now everyone can visit a young female in Wroclaw.
