Supreme Court reform issue
July 4, 2018
Article's tools:

Malgorzata Gersdorf
The July 3 deadline in Supreme Court reform and the EU's newly launched related infringement proceedings dominate coverage.
Chief Justice Malgorzata Gersdorf is officially pressed to early retirement and papers speculate about the means by which she will be sidelined. The daily Rzeczpospolita claims that the process will be hampered by the lack of judges willing to take the post, while the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna believes President Andrzej Duda will select judge Krzysztof Staryk as a pro tempore Chief Justice until a new Chief Justice can be named officially.
The government is unlikely to head towards an overtly public confrontation, a government insider tells the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
Some confusion remains about the legal basis for the eventual change in the Chief Justice post, with the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna suggesting that procedures allow the current chief to name a successor or allow passage to the eldest judge.
