Malgorzata Gersdorf
Poland's ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) seeks to accelerate the appointment of the new head of the Supreme Court amid a legal stalemate that followed the questionable retirement of First President Malgorzata Gersdorf, the dailies Rzeczpospolita and Gazeta Wyborcza wrote.
To that end, PiS wants the Parliament to adopt an amendment to the Supreme Court bill that will considerably reduce the number of justices in the Court's general assembly required for choosing a candidate for the position of the First President.
The move will make it easier for PiS to appoint the missing Supreme Court justices as recent legal turmoil narrowed the ranks of judges who want to be part of the institution.
