Polish president Andrzej Duda expressed the country's hopes for permanent presence of American troops on its home turf, a scenario that the US - according to President Donald Trump - is willing to seriously consider, the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna wrote of Duda's September 18 meeting with Trump at the White House.
However, the decisions on the subject might be made no sooner than spring 2019, according to suggestions from Duda's top aidee Krzysztof Szczerski and deputy Senate speaker Adam Bielan, cited by the daily. Duda and his milieu hope that the US military presence in the country will be somehow reinforced next year, but rather do not expect the US Congress to back the idea of a permanent base, the daily Rzeczpospolita claims.
The construction of the contested Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, supplies of the US LNG to Poland and cooperation of the Three Seas initiative participants with the US were the main topics of the meeting that ended in signing a declaration on strategic cooperation between Warsaw and Washington.
