Warsaw hosts World Scrabble Championship

A record number of 116 competitors from 44 countries on five continents will take part in this year’s World Scrabble Championship 2011, the most prestigious title in competitive English-language Scrabble, to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Warsaw on October 12 -16.

The competitors will play a total of 4,000 matches and form some 120,000 words.

The format will be a 36-round tournament with the top two players to contest a final. The winner will get a USD 20,000 worth cheque in addition to the World Scrabble Champion title.

The World Scrabble Championship has been held every second year since 1991. The current World Scrabble Champion, Pakorn Nemitrmansuk, who won the 2009 event held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia is going to defend his title in Warsaw.

Poland will be represented by Bartosz Pieta, Wojtek Usakiewicz and Rafal Dominiczak.

Since 2005 all championships have been organized and sponsored by Mattel.
