Music on the Heights

The seventh Music on the Heights International Chamber Music Festival will be held Sept. 12-19 in the southern town of Zakopane at the foot of the Polish Tatra Mountains.

Poland’s greatest composers, from Mieczysław Karłowicz and Karol Szymanowski to Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar, have always found inspiration in the Tatras.

The heights in the festival’s name are both a geographical reference and an indication of the quality of music audiences can look forward to during the festival concerts. The organizers regularly invite some of the finest chamber musicians from Poland and abroad.

This year, Music on the Heights focuses on song as a musical form that has evolved over the centuries and has been approached in countless ways by generations of composers. This year audiences will be introduced to songs by Karłowicz and Richard Strauss in late-Romantic arrangements for alto and a piano sextet, Gustav Mahler’s opus magnum Song of the Earth and the ethereal Four Songs for Crossing the Threshold by French composer Gérard Grisey.

In addition to Karłowicz, this year’s festival will feature many other Polish composers, from Andrzej Czajkowski, Paweł Szymański and Paweł Mykietyn to young but accomplished musicians like Aleksandra Gryka and Wojciech Blecharz. Audiences will also hear a lot of German and Austrian music by the likes of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Mahler, Strauss and Arnold Schoenberg, along with Italy’s Gioacchino Rossini and Saverio Mercadante. Compositions by Steve Reich will represent music from the United States. Along with concerts, the festival will include photographic and painting exhibitions, theatrical performances and dance and fashion shows. Festival audiences will also be able to attend open meetings with performers and movie screenings with live music.

The festival is organized by the Mieczysław Karłowicz Association in Zakopane.
