More than eight in 10 Poles are happy with life, according to the Diagnoza Społeczna survey carried out by Polish researchers every two years.

Eighty-four percent of Poles said they were happy with the last year, the best result since the survey was first carried out in 2000. Then, 69.2 percent said they were happy with the previous year. In 2013, the figure was 79.9 percent.

Meanwhile, 81.2 percent of Poles said they were satisfied with life as a whole, up from 78.9 percent two years ago, according to the survey.

Green Light for CVC to Buy PKP Energetyka
International private equity fund CVC Capital Partners has received the green light from the European Commission to buy power company PKP Energetyka from Poland’s state rail carrier PKP.

The European Commission announced its decision Sept. 10 after ruling that the transaction would not hinder fair competition.

PKP signed a preliminary deal in July with CVC to sell PKP Energetyka for zl.1.96 billion, or zl.1.41 billion excluding the company’s debt.

PKP Energetyka is Poland’s fourth-biggest power company in terms of how much energy it sells. It employs around 7,000.

CVC, a private equity fund that also offers investment consultancy services, manages funds on behalf of over 300 investors from the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Poland’s conservative opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party wants to introduce free healthcare for all citizens regardless of whether they are employed, according to the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily.

Around 4.5 million Poles are not entitled to free healthcare at the moment.

PiS, the country’s largest opposition party, is ahead of the ruling Civic Platform (PO) in the opinion polls in the run-up to Poland’s Oct. 25 parliamentary elections.
