Enthusiastic About Satire

Two new exhibitions that open at the Museum of Caricature and Cartoon Art in Warsaw this autumn will showcase the winners of the 38th international Satyrykon art competition.

Organized by the Legnica Culture Center in the southwestern city of Legnica and the Satyrykon Foundation for Culture and Society, the competition is open to cartoonists, graphic artists, painters, sculptors, poster designers and photographers from around the world.

The first exhibition at the museum, Satyrykon-Legnica 2015, features a selection of this year’s competition submissions, and the other is an individual exhibition of work by Andrei Popov, a Russian artist who took home the Grand Prix award at this year’s Satyrykon.

Artists taking part in the competition include members of Polish and foreign art organizations, and associations grouping satirists and art colleges. There are also a lot of unaffiliated contestants. This year, 606 artists from 51 countries sent in over 2,000 submissions, 147 of which qualified for the Satyrykon-Legnica 2015 exhibition.

Like each year, the participants were given a main theme to elaborate on. This time, the topic was “enthusiasm,” a subject tackled with a lot of originality and humor by the participants. Artists featured in the exhibition include Katarzyna Bogucka and Mirosław Gryń (Poland), Alessandro Gatto and Andrea Pecchia (Italy), Luc Descheemaeker (Belgium), Saman Torabi (Iran) and Pol Leurs (Luxembourg).
