Passing on the baton
Prof. Tadeusz Więckowski, rector of Wrocław University of Technology, says the university is about a succession of generations—each passing on the baton to the next for seven decades now. The university has just turned 70 and to mark the anniversary, it opened its own “walk of fame”—the Avenue of the Professors—in May this year. A memorial plaque there lists the names of the university’s more than 600 full professors since 1945, but the site has mainly been designed with students in mind. It offers room for get-togethers, relaxation, barefoot walks on neatly mowed lawns and those who feel like it can just lay down underneath a tree with a laptop (wi-fi is available).

Więckowski says that when the Avenue of the Professors was being designed, it generated mixed feelings. “Today, you can see we hit the nail on the head,” says Więckowski. “I watch how students come up to the plaques to find the names of their teachers. Senior professors bring their children and grandchildren and point to their own names on the plaques. They take pictures. This history began still before World War II and then continued when Wrocław University of Technology opened its doors with a lecture by Prof. Krzysztof Idaszewski. This history goes on.”
