PZU eyes important role in banking sector consolidation

Poland’s top insurer PZU and its unit Alior want to be one of the five or six market players around which the banking sector consolidates, PZU CEO Michal Krupinski said as cited by the daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.

The PZU group is mulling taking over both Raiffeisen and Bank Pekao, although PZU does not know whether Pekao is for sale, and will selectively screen market opportunities, the official said.

The potential mergers should not raise concern of the anti-monopoly body UOKiK as Alior does not have a large market share, Krupinski said.
