Cigarettes production surges in Poland

Polish tobacco firms produced enough cigarettes in the first five months of 2016 to satisfy a two-year domestic demand, building up inventories for a transition period running up to a new EU directive.

Production volume in the period jumped 25.5% year on year to 83.6 billion cigarettes.

The directive took effect on May 20, 2016 but tobacco companies have until May 20, 2017 to sell cigarettes not conforming with the new regulations, which state that health warnings are to cover 65% of the front and the back of cigarette packs, prohibiting sale of cigarettes in packs smaller than 20 and banning flavored cigarettes. Menthol cigarettes will be banned as of 2020.

Poland is the biggest European producer of ready-made tobacco products.
