National food holding to be created
The Polish government wants to establish a national food holding Narodowy Holding Spozywczy (NHS) with a view to stabilizing agricultural markets, Minister of Agriculture Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski told a conference.
"We want to bring together [agricultural] companies held by the State Treasury," the minister said.
By establishing the holding, Poland will seek to effectively buy up plant food products, he explained, adding that the government's plan assumes participation of farmers in the holding.
The holding will include, among others, state sugar producer Krajowa Spolka Cukrowa and grain storage company Elewarr.
In an earlier statement, the Ministry of Agriculture wrote that NHS "will constitute an alternative to companies taken over under the privatization [process] at the beginning of the transformation period."
