Elections will be "brutal"
Grzegorz Schetyna
Poland's local elections in 2018 could prove to be the nation's most brutal to date, the semi-weekly paper Polska The Times said in an analysis.
Both main parties have started off with a set of mud-slinging campaigns even ahead of party election conventions with the governing Law and Justice (PiS) slated for the coming weekend and the joint convention of opposition parties Civic Platform (PO) and Nowoczesna the next.
No further unification amongst the opposition parties yet seems likely as Polish Peoples Party (PSL), Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) and others remain firmly independent.
The PO - Nowoczesna tie-up could prove shaky if the group does poorly in the elections and PO leader Grzegorz Schetyna loses his leadership position.
