Researchers at the Warsaw Institute of Aviation have designed an unmanned plane powered by solar panels that will cruise over the Earth in the stratosphere, scanning for fires, floods, sudden weather changes as well as monitoring air pollution. The plane, called the Phoenix, will be able to fly nonstop at altitudes of up to 18 km for up to six months at a time before it needs to land. The aircraft will be a flying laboratory that will carry cameras and other equipment. The Phoenix is environmentally friendly and does not generate air pollution. It has been developed by a 20-plus-strong research team using more than zl.10 million in co-funding from the National Center for Research and Development. Turn to page 7 to read more about this magnificent flying machine and why it is needed.
