Info

An internatonally acclaimed play by Polish playwright Tadeusz Słobodzianek, Nasza klasa (Our Class), a shocking tale about complicated Polish-Jewish relations in the 20th century, is shown on the Na Woli Stage of the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw.

Tadeusz Słobodzianek play was the first Polish drama to be given the country's prestigious Nike Literary Prize in 2010. The European Theatre Convention ranked it among the best contemporary European plays written during 2009 and 2010.

The play is set in Poland and is inspired by true events, such as the Jedwabne pogrom which led to the bloody demise of 300 Polish Jews in 1941.

It begins in 1925 when a group of schoolchildren, Jewish and Catholic, discuss their dreams and ambitions: one of them wants to be a fireman, another one a film star, still another a pilot or a doctor. As the children grow up, their country is torn apart by the invading Soviet and German armies. Internal grievances deepen as fervent nationalism develops; friends betray each other; violence escalates.

Słobodzianek is one of Poland's leading playwrights. His plays Turlajgroszek and Merlin won the Fringe First award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993 and 1994.

Słobodzianek founded the Laboratorium Dramatu in Warsaw in 2003 to support the development of drama.
