Spotlight on Polish War Heroes
date:Monday, 13 February 2017
End date:Sunday, 31 December 2017

A captivating exhibition at the Documentary and Feature Film Studios in Warsaw focuses on “The Silent Unseen,” an elite Polish paratroop unit trained in Britain during World War II and sent on missions to Nazi-occupied Poland.

Combining a historical display and a movie set, The Silent Unseen: Film Meetings exhibition takes audiences to locations where The Silent Unseen (Polish name Cichociemni) used to prepare for their missions. The items on show include a prop airplane imitating the one that flew the Polish soldiers to drop zones in Poland.

In addition to its historical angle, the exhibition serves as an interactive introduction to the filmmaking industry, showing how a historical documentary is made. Visitors are able to see the behind-the-scenes of film production, including costumes, sets, storyboards and props from previous documentaries about the Silent Unseen.

According to Agnieszka Będkowska, head of film production and educational projects at the studios, the filmmaking setting gives audiences a feel of the times the elite soldiers lived in. “We are not doing a historical reenactment here; this is a colorful world populated by heroes and emotions,” Będkowska says. “We are tapping into the imagination and sensitivity of the people who are part of our project.”
