The Pilots - new musical in town
date:Saturday, 10 February 2018
End date:Monday, 31 December 2018
Place:The Musical Theater "Roma"

Warsaw’s Roma Music Theater is staging a brand-new musical entitled Piloci (The Pilots), the Roma’s original production. Set during World War II, this action-packed love story is inspired by the lives of pilots of the No. 307 Polish Night Fighter Squadron that fought in the Battle of Britain. The protagonists are a Polish aviator called Jan and a Warsaw cabaret actress by the name of Nina. Deeply in love with each other, the two young people get brutally separated by the war.

Roma Theater director Wojciech Kępczyński, who directs Piloci and wrote the libretto, describes the Polish musical as a natural change after a string of international hits the Roma has staged in recent years, including The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables and Mamma Mia!

”I had long been thinking of a show like this, especially because it resonates with the history of my family”, says Kępczyński. ”My Grandma’s two brothers took part in the Battle of England. Piloci is not a reenactment of any kind, though. It is a fantasy, the story of hard choices that our heroes had to make when confronted with turbulent events.”

Working on the new production, Kępczyński teamed up with some of his regular partners, including the brothers Jakub and Dawid Lubowicz, who have written the music. The lyrics have been penned by Michał Wojnarowski, the sets are the work of Jeremi Brodnicki, and the costumes have been designed by Dorota Kołodyńska. The show will be choreographed by Agnieszka Brańska.

”The music side of Piloci is the result of our musical experiments and experience of many years,” says composer Dawid Lubowicz. ”We have been exploring different genres ever since we started working with music. Piloci is set in a highly specific time, but despite many stylistic references to the era, the music will elegantly ‘wear’ a contemporary outfit.”

The composers are promising distinctively musical numbers based on long phrases, but also interspersed with modern beats. A full orchestra will be involved in the production.

The visual side of the show is being taken care of by Platige Image, a Polish company that specializes in computer graphics and special effects. Audiences will be treated to 3D video sequences displayed on LED walls produced specifically for Piloci, including scenes of aerial battles and a 1940s-style animated show.
