Info

Students of the Theater Academy in Warsaw are staging their diploma play – Otello , directed by Grazyna Kania. The play is based on Feridun Zaimoglu & Guenter Senkel’s version of the play.

"I am not what I am," says Jago, modifying the words of God contained in the Scriptures. With this statement, Shakespeare bestowed on him the power to create new, illusory worlds, and so this average soldier, whose pride has been hurt, orchestrated the downfall of his leader, the influential Venetian Moor, Otello.

Here we see a noble warrior who gets entangled in a network of intrigue and for good falls into the trap of jealousy betraying what was dear to him. Suddenly, he begins to see a whore in his loving wife Desdemona and an enemyand traitor in his a devoted friend, Cassio.

Otello is, however, only one of many lonely and possessed by fear characters. Deprived of love, people cling to its substitutes: career, sex, intrigue. The human world, driven by fear, when it assumes presumptions, insinuations and half-truths, turns into a labyrinth of illusion, paranoia, and stereotypes. In this world, loneliness and frustration are fueling readiness for cruelty and violence.

Grażyna Kania, in collaboration with Marcin Bartnikowski, sought a suitable tone in Otello's translation and adaptation, based on the Zaimoglu & Senkel’s version, which is distinguished by a language full of sharp jokes, emphasizing hatred, racism, chauvinism and homophobia.
