WINTERTIME WITH ORBIS HOTEL GROUP
The Peaks of the Season

14 December 2005

The mountains look most beautiful in the winter, and the Karkonosze Moun-tains are astonishing at this time of year. The unique local climate-an alpine microclimate at 2,000 meters above sea level-and abundant, long-lasting snow provide excellent conditions for winter sports six months of the year. Fans of downhill skiing, cross-country, snowboard and sledding will all enjoy excellent weather conditions.

The best known ski resorts include Szklarska Poręba with the SkiArena Szrenica ski complex, Babiniec winter sports center and the Cross-Country Skiing and Biathlon Center in Jakuszyce, and Karpacz with the Śnieżka ski complex, the ski-jump and a bobsled run.

Szklarska Poręba's main advantage is a long snow season, which attracts crowds of skiers. The town has the most advanced skiing facilities in the Karkonosze. The two-strip cable car to Szrenica and a system of T-lifts service five ski runs of various difficulty. The slopes are covered by artificial snow and have lighting. Every year the Śniegolepy snow sculpting competition takes place in Szklarska Poręba.

At the Cross-Country Skiing Center in Szklarska Poręba-Jakuszyce there are trails of different difficulty and their total length is over 100 kilometers. The conditions are excellent, with snow cover from November until May. Every March the Piast Race is held, part of the Euroloppet European Long-Distance Popular Race Series. This is the biggest such event in Poland.

Karpacz is as attractive in the winter as Szklarska Poręba. It offers ski runs of different difficulty and Na Kopie complex, whose chair lift is connected to other lift systems. The town also has several shorter lifts, a snowboard pipe and a cross-country trail. Karpacz hosts the Nordic Combined World Cup B competitions.

T-lifts can also be found in the villages of Jelenia Góra county-Przesieka, Zachełmie, Strużnica and in Mysłakowice commune, as well as in the Łysa Góra complex in Dziwiszów. Jelenia Góra, called the Pearl of Karkonosze, is located in the middle of a picturesque valley, surrounded on all sides by the Karkonosze Mountains-Izerskie, Kaczawskie and Rudawy Janowickie, and intersected by the Bóbr, Kamienna and Wrzosówka rivers. Hills add to the charm of the city-a green enclave of historic monuments, old residential districts with traditional space arrangement and walking areas. The unique character of Jelenia Góra is reinforced by its districts-the Old Town's preserved medieval layout; the oldest Polish spa in Cieplice, famous for its hot springs; Sobieszów with the ruins of a 14th-century castle; and the well-known holiday spot of Jagniątków, made famous by Nobel-prize winner Gerhart Hauptmann.

From Jelenia Góra, the most beautiful mountain areas are within a stone's throw. From the viewing points, you can easily see Śnieżka, Szrenica and other peaks of Karkonosze. Around the city is a network of hiking trails to the most interesting areas of Jelenia Góra Valley. In the winter, visitors flock to the surrounding Rudawy Janowickie, Kaczawskie and Izerskie mountain ranges. The local map of historic monuments covers more than 200 sites, including castles, palaces and churches, so there is a lot to see at any time of the year.
