Polpharma Starogard Gdański, one of Poland's largest pharmaceutical companies, plans to take over several small pharmaceutical producers in Europe to become the largest pharmaceutical company in Central and Eastern Europe.
"We plan to buy a small company in Germany, and we are also interested in acquisitions in Russia and Ukraine," said Jerzy Starak, chairman of the supervisory board of Polpharma. These transactions are designed to enable Polpharma to increase its production and exports. The company's plans call for an increase in sales from $205 million in 2002 to more than $500 million in 2007.
The company plans to considerably increase its export-oriented production, said Grzegorz Michniewski, commercial director of Polpharma. In 2007, the share of exports is expected to rise to 40 percent, from the current 17 percent. So far, the main markets for the company's products are Russia and the United States, but pharmaceuticals made in Starogard Gdański are also known in almost 50 other countries around the world. In the future, Polpharma plans to enter more markets including Australia and Canada.
Polpharma is Poland's largest pharmaceutical producer in terms of quantity, with a more than 12-percent market share. In terms of sales, it is second. "We hope that we will soon become indisputably the largest pharmaceutical company in Poland," Starak said.
