April 10 marked three years since the death of Jacek Kaczmarski, regarded as the bard of the Solidarity movement. In March, EMI Music Poland released a 37-CD box set titled Arka Noego to commemorate what would have been the singer-songwriter's 50th birthday. The box includes all official albums, extra recordings from various sources and songs from the vaults of Radio Free Europe, with Kaczmarski's commentary. For those who already own all of Kaczmarski's songs, EMI Music Poland is preparing an 8-CD box set that will only contain the extras. The set, Mała Arka Noego, will be out in late April.
Kaczmarski was a poet, prose writer and singer. He started his musical career in the 1970s, writing songs tackling historical and social issues. Kaczmarski gave concerts in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia. He spent the 1980s in exile and had his own program on the Polish-language service of Radio Free Europe. A supporter of the opposition in Poland, Kaczmarski made history as the "bard" of Solidarity. One of his most famous songs, "Mury" (The Walls) became a symbol of anticommunist resistance.
In 2002, Kaczmarski was diagnosed with throat cancer. He died two years later.
