When an owner builds a house, he aims to make sure it is comfortable and adjusted to his needs. Why not take things a step further and create a home that will check whether we have turned the lights off and closed the windows? When we come home, it will greet us, turning the light on at the garage gate and opening the door. It will make a coffee, put our favorite music on and switch on the lights to create a restful ambiance. This is not science fiction-such a home is possible owing new technology.

Legend has it that St. Valentine was a Christian priest who officiated at secret weddings in defiance of a ban by Roman emperor Claudius II. The emperor had issued an edict forbidding people to get married to increase the pool of young men available for military service. For this, Valentine was sentenced to death. He went on to become the patron saint of people in love, while Feb. 14 became a day when love and romance is celebrated, a tradition that appeared for the first time in 14th-century England. Together with English immigrants, St. Valentine's day reached America and from there it spread all over the world.

Danish furniture and interior design specialists BoConcept unveiled their 2009 collections Sept. 11. The company has switched focus to the not-so-fair sex under a Long Live Men banner after years of deferring to women. All aspects of BoConcept's interior design have adopted a more masculine mien. The colors are dark and dramatic, the furniture is large and solid, the surfaces are metallic and break with convention, and the accessories have been contrived to create understated, yet sophisticated and elegant interiors.
