Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said May 8 Poland was earmarking zl.500,000 in humanitarian aid for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Burma. The funds will be transferred to UNICEF, which is coordinating the international aid effort in Burma.
Archbishop Józef Michalik, chairman of the Conference of the Episcopate of Poland, called on all bishops to raise funds at churches across Poland for the cyclone victims May 18. Michalik was responding to an appeal from Pope Benedict XVI. Caritas Internationalis, a Catholic charity, is also coordinating aid efforts and its Polish arm, Caritas Polska, has contributed $20,000. Caritas Polska director Fr. Marian Subocz says that all money raised will be spent on food, water and medicine for those most urgently in need. Cyclone Nargis, which hit Burma at the beginning of May, was the worst natural disaster to afflict the region since a devastating tsunami hit the region in December 2004. United Nations officials say the cyclone may have killed over 100,000 people. More than a million people have been left homeless.
