By A.R.
28 May 2008

Polish rail carrier PKP Cargo moved its billionth tonne of freight in May. The company is the largest rail carrier in Poland and the second largest in the EU.

PKP Cargo was set up in October 2001 to replace PKP Dyrekcja Kolejowych Przewozów Towarowych Cargo. The company moved its 500 millionth tonne in December 2004.

Hard coal leads the charge, accounting for 42.1 percent of all goods transported by PKP by volume since 2001. Rock, gravel and lime are running a distant second with 12.3 percent and metals and metal products are in third place with 8.7 percent. Liquid fuels and oil derivatives with 5.6 percent, chemicals with 5.4 and brown coal, coke and briquettes with 5 percent make up the bulk of the remainder.
