Summer in the City

17 June 2009

Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, one of the biggest jazz festivals in Poland, will begin in Warsaw in early July. It will feature a number of international stars, including the World Saxophone Quartet, Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright, and the John Zorn Quartet.

The festival will open with a concert by the World Saxophone Quartet of New York City at the Kongresowa Hall. That same day the Art Ensemble of Chicago will take to the stage. This legendary band was established back in the 1960s by Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Phillip Wilson, Malachi Favors and Lester Bowie. They introduced freely improvised ethnic jazz to big concert halls. In Warsaw, the band will perform in a new lineup for the first time, with trumpet virtuoso Hugh Ragin and double bass master Harrison Bunkhead.

Two days later, the Zorn Quartet will perform, featuring Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Bill Laswell and Milford Graves.

The following week, trumpeter Dave Douglas will perform with promising young Polish jazz musician Włodek Pawlik.

There will also be a concert by Steven Seagal. The famous action movie star and martial arts master will sing and play the guitar.
