Former Solidarity leader and ex-president Lech Wałęsa, Britain's ambassador to Poland, Rick Todd, and archbishop Józef Kowalczyk, the papal nuncio in Poland, officially opened the new British embassy in Warsaw Oct. 16.
"This building is a symbol of the very good partnership linking Poland and Great Britain," said Todd. "Today, Poland and Great Britain are closer to each other than ever before. Just this year, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been to Poland once and Foreign Secretary David Miliband three times."
Kowalczyk blessed the new building and congratulated the ambassador. Wałęsa started his speech with a joke, saying, "The building has been constructed and blessed, now we can sin." He added, "In this building, we shall seek and find solutions to help us avoid new crises and show to those who don't believe it that the world of the future is one founded on common values."
The new embassy was designed by Tony Fretton, who won an international competition for his work on the building. Over 4,000 square meters in size, the embassy cost £34 million to build.
