Kupił, nie kupił, potargować się warto
At the Bargaining Table

Even though new stores are constantly opening in Warsaw, the city’s residents still like shopping at marketplaces. Apart from ordinary marketplaces at which fresh produce can be bought, Warsaw has two unique places visited eagerly by both Poles and foreigners.
The first one is the Dziesięciolecia Stadium, also known as the “Russian Market.” The second place is the market in the Koło district known as the “flea market.” If you would like to visit one of these places, read our tips on how to talk with marketplace sellers. Because, as Poles say, ”buy it or not, it’s good to haggle.”

Co można kupić na „ruskim bazarze”?
tanie: kompakty, filmy na DVD, programy do komputera, kosmetyki, ubrania, kawior

Things to be bought at the Russian Market
cheap: CDs, DVDs, PC software, cosmetics, clothes, caviar

Ponieważ w większości są to rzeczy produkowane i sprzedawane nielegalnie, mówi się o nich ,,lewe”, na przykład: ,,lewe programy” albo „lewe kompakty”
As most of these things are produced and sold illegally, they are called “bootlegs,” for instance: “bootleg software” or “bootleg CDs.”

Co można kupić na Kole, wszelkie starocie, czyli stare: meble, sztućce, obrazy, biżuterię, książki, i mnóstwo innych starych rzeczy.
Things to be bought at Koło:
all kinds of old junk, that is old: furniture, cutlery, paintings, jewelry, books, and numerous other old objects.

Jak zapytać o cenę:
- Ile kosztuje ten kompakt? albo, bardziej nieformalnie
- Ile pan chce za ten kompakt?
Jeśli uważamy, że cena jest zbyt wysoka, pytamy:
- Dlaczego tak drogo? albo bardziej nieformalnie: Tyle pieniędzy za coś takiego? Chyba pani żartuje!
Jeśli chcemy negocjować cenę, czyli ,,targować się”, mówimy:
- Kupiłbym/ Kupiłabym to, ale nie za tyle.

How to ask for the price:
How much is this CD? or, less formally: How much do you want for this CD?
If we think that the price is too high, we ask: Why is it so expensive? or, less formally:
So much money for such a thing? You must be joking!
If we want to negotiate the price, we say:
I’d buy it, but not for that much.


Handlarz może zapytać nas: - Ile pan/ pani daje?
Reszta zależy już tylko od ciebie i twojej inwencji.


TY: Ile pan chce za ten stół?
Handlarz: Jak dla pani, to prawie nic. 2 tysiące złotych.
Ty: Żartuje pan? Tyle pieniędzy za taki zniszczony mebel?
Handlarz: Pani kochana, przecież to antyk! Wie pani, ile naprawdę jest wart?
Ty: Wiem, maksymalnie 700 złotych.
Handlarz: Teraz to pani żartuje. A tak poważnie, to ile pani daje?
Ty: Już mówiłam, 700 złotych.
Handlarz: Siedem stówek to trochę za mało. Sprzedam go pani za tysiąc złotych.
Ty: Osiemset i ani grosza więcej.
Handlarz: Osiemset pięćdziesiąt. To co, umowa stoi?
Ty: .....................*

The seller may ask us: And how much would you give? The rest is up to you.
You: How much do you want for this table?
Seller: For you, I’ll take nearly nothing -zl.2,000.
You: Are you kidding? So much money for such a damaged piece of furniture?
Seller: Dear lady, but this is an antique! Do you know how much it’s really worth?
You: I know: not more than zl.700.
Seller: Now you’re kidding. And, seriously, how much would you give?
You: I’ve already told you: zl.700.
Seller: 7 00 is too little. I’ll sell it to you for zl.1,000.
You: 800, and not a grosz more.
Seller: 850. So, are we agreed?
You: ................. *
