Szczawno-Zdrój is one of the oldest spas in Lower Silesia. The first accounts of the town date from the early 13th century. The real history of Szczawno-Zdrój as a health resort began in the late 16th century, when the physician to the aristocratic Hochberg family-the owners of Szczawno-confirmed the medicinal properties of the mineral waters. The spa started to develop fast at the beginning of the 19th century, with numerous specialist balneotherapeutic facilities, boarding houses and hotels. The treatment applied here became famous across Europe. The Zdrojowy (Spa) Theater was constructed in the late 19th century and it has been popular ever since. The spa became fashionable in Europe and had no shortage of visitors, who praised the atmosphere of the place, its local attractions and the efficient treatment.
This is how it remains today. The advantages of Szczawno-Zdrój, situated at the foot of the Chełmiec Mountain, include its mild and invigorating climate, the scenery, its clean air and vast areas of greenery. These play a key role in the treatment of orthopedic problems, diseases of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts, laryngologic disorders and light forms of diabetes.
The town, the population of which is 6,000, is again a popular place for recreation and recovery, as well as meetings of scientists, businesspeople and cultural circles.
