The first comprehensive exhibition of works by more than 80 artists known to have worked under Jan Matejko marks the 110th anniversary of the painter's death.
Until now, chiefly works by the best known representatives of Matejko's studio were exhibited: Jacek Malczewski (Ellenai - see picture), Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Maurycy Gottlieb and Leon Wyczółkowski. Lesser-known names have now been saved from obscurity, among them Artur Markowicz, Ludomir Benedyktowicz, Kazimierz Pochwalski, Ludwik de Laveaux and Tadeusz Popiel. The exhibits come from more than 10 Polish museums and private collections, chiefly those owned by the artists' families.
The exhibition features various disciplines, including painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic art, stained-glass work, ceramics and fabric. It also shows "the Matejko school" as an artistic phenomenon and a social trend. The art of the epoch primarily comprised historical and symbolic painting as well as Art Nouveau, in addition to landscapes and portraits.
Silesian Museum in Katowice, 3 W. Korfantego Ave., through April 18.
