As many as 157 artists, 24 exhibitions, 13 concerts-from jazz to classical music to hip-hop-eight theater and dance performances, 12 movie screenings, happenings, lectures, workshops and book promotions-these, in brief, are the attractions of the New New Yorkers Festival that started June 24 in Warsaw. The main organizer of this huge undertaking is the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw. The project's goal is to present Polish immigrants' contribution to American culture.
Next to the figures known worldwide, such as photographer Ryszard Horowitz, architect Daniel Libeskind, draftsmen Janusz Kapusta and Tomasz Olbiński, Andrzej Dudziński, jazz artists Michał Urbaniak and Urszula Dudziak, the festival also presents a broad overview of works by young artists, particularly those linked with Warsaw.
The Center for Contemporary Art at the Ujazdowski Castle (6 Ujazdowskie Ave.) presents childhood reminiscences of Jan Barącz, for whom the ruins of the castle that was destroyed during World War II served as a favorite playground. In Empik Gallery, it is possible to see a display of photographs from NYC and Warsaw taken by Marek Sułek, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Mirosław Nizio, whose architectural designs win competitions in Warsaw, presents his sculptures and drawings in his gallery in Warsaw's Praga district (3 Inżynierska St.)-one that follows in the footsteps of its successful predecessor in New York. Maria Przybysz, who was born and raised in Warsaw, has worked in New York for a year and a half. Her photographs of women from NYC can be seen in Centralny Dom Qultury club (12 Burakowska St.).
