Facelift for Warsaw

The last few years have seen a string of modern office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and sports facilities springing up in Warsaw-the infrastructure the capital lacked in the communist era. Now the time has come for the redevelopment of deteriorating rail stations, streets, stadiums, main squares, parks and other urban spaces, as well as residential estates. This is accompanied by a major cleanup and modernization drive in the city.
Full Steam Ahead on Roads Overhaul

The streets of the capital are being given a long overdue overhaul. This is a trying time for Varsovians with road works holding up traffic along major arteries and smaller streets. Still, people seem to be taking it all in their stride. Not that they have much choice. A lot of the work simply cannot be put off any longer.

Germany's foreign ministry is providing 5 million euros for the development of a Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, under an agreement signed Nov. 12 by German ambassador to Poland Michael Gerdts and Marian Turski, chairman of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.

The city of Warsaw started a promotional campaign in Britain Nov. 12 in conjunction with new Warsaw-Bristol flights launched by the easyJet low-cost airline. The four-week campaign involves the airline's website, the easyJet in-flight monthly magazine and advertisements mailed to easyJet passengers.

Warsaw is busier than ever promoting itself. In the summer, the Warsaw Promotion Office at City Hall placed billboards all over the Polish coast showing some of Warsaw's landmarks, and this month you can see buildings such as the Palace of Culture and Science decorated with huge banners advertising modern art as part of the Fall in Love With Warsaw campaign.

Warsaw traders belonging to the Nowy Świat Association will launch the Christmas shopping season by switching on the Christmas lights at Zamkowy Square on Dec. 8 and Nowy Świat Street on Dec. 9.

Warsaw is competing against other big Polish cities to be named European Capital of Culture in 2016. One Polish city and one Spanish city will share the title, which will be parceled out between states from the "old" and "new" European Union.
