Christian Culture Festival

The annual Festival of Christian Culture was held in Lodz for two weeks in November for the 13th time. The festival comprised 27 events featuring performers from 17 countries, including shows by artists from Japan, Trinidad and Israel. The festival events attracted an audience of 10,000.
A Great Polish Theater in Lodz

This year marks the 120th birthday of the Stefan Jaracz Theater in Lodz. This, one of Poland's oldest theaters, offers a bold, intriguing repertoire, evolving constantly in tune with the changing demands of the audience. After a recent expansion, theater-goers can now also plan a visit to one of its four regional branches in Radomsko, Skierniewice, Sieradz and Piotrków Trybunalski.

This is after Poland's parliament last September passed a law to speed up the construction of stadiums, sports infrastructure and roads for the Euro 2012 European soccer championships to be hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
Revitalisation of The Textile Museum in £ód¼

The so-called White Factory (Bia³a Fabryka) is the oldest part of a 19th-century cotton mill once owned by £ód¼ industrialist Ludwik Geyer. It is one of the most beautiful examples of industrial architecture in £ód¼. The White Factory, whose buildings enclose a quadrangle, makes for a stunning sight from both a landscaping and architectural point of view since it is sited by a lake on the edge of the W³adys³aw Reymont Park.

Poland's central city of £ód¼ won the Golden City Gate Award in this year's international competition for films about regions, cities and tourism during the ITB Berlin, the world's largest travel trade fair, held in Germany. The fair attracted participants from 180 countries and the film competition some 80 entrants. £ód¼ Mayor Jerzy Kropiwnicki said that he was happy "to have fairly and squarely beaten the other contestants" on March 7, with his city's film, entitled £ód¼, A City of Culture.

Nudes and the Quest for Beauty

The Beauty of Nudity exhibition at £ód¼'s City History Museum features some 140 pieces of work that the exhibition organizers borrowed from both other museums and private collections. The exhibition has work by 65 Polish artists, including W³adys³aw Podkowiński, Leon Wyczó³kowski, Józef Pankiewicz, Wojciech Weiss, Tymon Niesio³owski and Jerzy Nowosielski.

Księży Młyn (Priest's Mill) in Łódź is a factory, palace and residential complex developed by industrialist Karol Wilhelm Scheibler. The city's largest manufacturer moved to Łódź from western Rhineland in Germany in the mid-19th century to become one of those who built the industrial power of the city.

Alongside large factory complexes, the city of £ód¼ is home to many lavish mansions and villas that were built by factory owners and other industrialists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The size and design of the buildings were aimed at displaying their owners' social status. Many of these luxury houses, especially those located outside the city center, had large yards around them. Around 50 such villas were built in £ód¼ at the turn of the 20th century. They did not form a residential quarter, though, but were usually located in the vicinity of factory buildings.

Prof. Jacek Moll has headed the pediatric cardiac surgery ward at the Polish Mothers' Memorial Hospital in £ód¼ since 1990. Moll, born in 1949, is the son of pioneering cardiac surgeon Jan Moll, and his son Maciej is also training to be a cardiac surgeon. "Medicine runs in the family. My wife is also a cardiologist and we work together," says Moll.
100 Investors in £ód¬ SEZ

The £ód¼ Special Economic Zone, which has been running for 10 years, ranks among the most successful SEZs in Poland. In August it welcomed its 100th investor. By the end of the year, the number of permits issued to companies wanting to operate in the zone is expected to reach 115, with total investment amounting to 400 million euros.

Villa Under the Apple Trees

The beautiful Art Nouveau Kindermann villa in £ód¼ is one of the most interesting historical buildings in the city and in Poland. The building has an irregular, asymmetrical structure. It was built in 1903 and designed a year earlier by Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger as a small, luxurious mock hunting lodge.

In May 2006, £ód¼ residents witnessed perhaps the most important event of the year on the Polish retail space market: the opening of the Manufaktura mall comprising a hypermarket, a shopping gallery and cinema, in the future to be complemented with a hotel, an art gallery and a museum.

The world knows Marek Edelman as the last commander of the 1943 Ghetto Uprising in Warsaw. During World War II, he was one of the organizers of the Jewish Fighting Organization and took command of the uprising when Mordechaj Anielewicz was killed. Edelman recounted the details of the uprising in the book The Ghetto Fights, published soon after the war, and years later in the book Zdążyć przed Panem Bogiem (Be There Before God) by Hanna Krall.

The 7th Festival of Science, Technology and Art will take place in £ód¼ April 18-24. This year it will feature nearly 200 events, including presentations of scientific experiments that usually raise the greatest interest among visitors. For the first time, a Science Picnic will be organized. It will be held on the premises of the renovated headquarters of the £ód¼ Science Society, the festival's organizer.
