A City of Contrasts

23 February 2005

Sosnowiec, a city with county status, is one of the largest and most populated cities of the Upper Silesia metropolitan area. The city's surface of 91.2 sq km is currently home to 230,000 residents.

Sosnowiec is located next to the province's capital, Katowice, at an intersection of Poland's main transportation routes. Less than 20 kilometers from the city is the international Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport whose network of international connections is growing dynamically.

Until the early 1990s, the economic foundations of the city were based on heavy industry represented by mining and steel mills. Nowdays, Sosnowiec is one of the first industrial cities in Poland to have totally changed its economic structure. It focuses on trade, services and manufacturing industries, and the number of businesses registered in Sosnowiec is more than 25,000.

The city has a strong intellectual capital in its thriving academic circles and is open to cooperation with local authorities and business. Sosnowiec is home to constantly expanding universities such as the University of Silesia, the Medical University of Silesia and the Silesian University of Technology. The University of Management and Marketing is also headquartered in Sosnowiec.

The policy adopted by city authorities a few years ago has resulted in growing interest in Sosnowiec as the location of investment projects, especially those involving foreign capital. The largest foreign companies are Timken Polska Sp. z o.o., Foster Wheeler Energy-Fakop, Magnetti Marelli, Roltra Morse, Heraeus Elektro-Nite, Sutco Poland and ER. SI. Poland. The well-known American corporation Caterpillar has also expressed interest in investing in Sosnowiec and Daimler Chrysler Automobil Polska opened the largest Mercedes-Benz showroom in the Upper Silesia metropolitan area in the city. A large factor in the formation of new enterprises and service companies is played by the Special Economic Zone created in Sosnowiec thanks to the efforts of local authorities to attract investors.

One of the most recent initiatives by the local authorities is the establishment of the Sosnowiec Science and Technology Park. The park's objective is to enable the transfer of knowledge and technology between science centers and entrepreneurs and to provide good conditions for financial support for new investments by entrepreneurs. Alongside the Sosnowiec Commune, participants in the project include Spółka Restrukturyzacji Kopalń SA and the largest universities in the region-the Medical University of Silesia Academy of Medicine, the University of Silesia, the Silesian University of Technology. Research and development work and other activities conducted in the park will involve disciplines such as pharmacy, health protection technologies, bio-IT and biomedical engineering, information technologies and environmental protection.

We invite all interested in investing in Sosnowiec to visit our websites: www.um.sosnowiec.pl and www.parki.sosnowiec.webserver.pl.
