A Couple of Brazilians

By Magda Kuszewska
15 June 2005

World jazz stars Flora Purim and Airto Moreira will play June 18 in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. The Jazz Zone event will be held as part of the second edition of the Warsaw Culture Zone Festival. It is this famous Brazilian couple's third Polish concert, part of their European tour to promote the album Flora's Song.

Moreira, a famous multi-instrumentalist from Brazil, made his debut 50 years ago performing with Latin jazz artist Hermeto Pascoala. In 1968, Moreira and his wife Flora Purim emigrated to the United States, where Moreira became a star of Latin jazz percussion. He played fusion jazz in the band of Miles Davis, played with support for Return To Forever-Chick Corea's band-and toured and recorded with Stan Getz and Gato Barbieri. Carlos Santana has invited Moreira to recording sessions and concerts a number of times. Today, Moreira is regarded as a percussion master.

Purim is a charismatic vocalist endowed with a characteristic, warm voice. She started working with her future husband in the 1960s, when she toured with Quarteto Novo. She has sung with Chick Corea, Gil Evans, George Duke and Getz. She has recorded over 30 albums with her husband alone. The Brazilian diva is regarded as one of the most excellent jazz vocalists in the world.

At the Saturday concert, the audience will hear works from the latest album Flora's Song, which features a very interesting combination of jazz with Latin and ethnic music.

Jazz Zone concert: June 18 (Saturday), 6 p.m., stage in front of the Palace of Culture and Science, 1 Defilad Sq. Admission is free.
